Recent Programs
Lord Fairfax SBDC held a Veterans Business Conference in August. Veterans� advocates presented information and resources to assist veterans who are starting or expanding a business. Representatives from U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, US Small Business Administration, GMU-Procurement Technical Assistance Center, VA Department of Business Assistance, VA Department of Veterans Affairs, Lord Fairfax Community College and a panel of commercial bankers participated.
Virginia Highlands SBDC held the 12th Annual Womens� Business Conference in September. Presenters from local, state and federal organizations provided information on governmental, financial and marketing resources available to the woman business owner.
Call for Nominations
Small Business Veteran of the Year - The Virginia SBDC Network is proud to work with and assist veteran business owners. Nominations for 2005 are being accepted now and the award will be presented in Spring 2006.

Small Business of the Year - The U.S. Small Business Administration recognizes outstanding businesses and advocates for their personal achievements and contributions to the economy. Nominations for 2006 Small Business awards are being accepted now.

Hurricane Katrina Disaster Assistance
Two members of the Virginia SBDC staff - Henry Reeves, Director, James Madison University SBDC and Reed Kennedy, Business Counselor New River Valley SBDC - have volunteered to serve in the Association of Small Business Development Centers (ASBDC) Katrina Relief program. This program will coordinate about 100 SBDC consultants to help business owners displaced by the hurricane obtain SBA disaster financing and other recovery assistance.
SBDC Achievements
- New River Valley SBDC and SBDCs in southwest Virginia received a grant from the Verizon Foundation to support an additional business counselor for Southwest Virginia and Mt. Empire Community Colleges.
- Tim Blankenbecler, Director, Mountain Empire Community College SBDC completed MECC's Computer Software Specialist Certificate Program.
- Jim Boyd, Director, Southwest Virginia Community College SBDC received the Most Valuable Player award presented by the Tazewell County Economic Development Office.
- Jody Keenan, Director, Virginia SBDC Network was elected to the Board of Directors for the Association of Small Business Development Centers.
- Henry Reeves, Director, James Madison University SBDC completed Intuit's Train the Trainer for QuickBooks.
- Cathy Wiltse, Associate Director, Virginia SBDC Network was recognized as a State Star by the Association of Small Business Development Centers.
The Virginia SBDC network is the most extensive business development and assistance program in the Commonwealth. There are 29 local SBDCs across Virginia providing professional business counseling, training, and information resources to help grow and strengthen Virginia businesses. The network is funded in part by the U.S. Small Business Administration, Mason Enterprise Center of George Mason University, and local sponsors including universities, community colleges, chambers of commerce, municipalities, economic development organizations, and private companies.
