Worker Classification: Independent Contractor vs. Employee October 1, 2026, 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm A business might pay an independent contractor and an employee for the same or similar work, but there are key legal differences between the two. It is critical for business owners to correctly determine whether the people providing services are employees or independent contractors. Speaker(s): Alfred Page and Anika Pompey: Together, these IRS professionals bring more than 40 years of combined experience in tax administration, compliance, taxpayer education, and stakeholder outreach. One speaker has served with the Internal Revenue Service for 19 years and currently works in Stakeholder Liaison, leading outreach and presentations for industry groups, professional associations, and tax professionals. Previously, they spent 13 years as a Tax Law Specialist in the Tax Exempt and Government Entities Division, where they became a recognized subject matter expert in tax-exempt organizations, particularly IRC Section 501(c)(7) organizations and Unrelated Business Income Tax (UBIT). Their experience includes developing national training programs, assisting IRS field personnel with complex technical issues, preparing recommendations for Private Letter Rulings (PLRs), Technical Advice Memoranda (TAMs), and other technical guidance, and creating educational resources for both IRS employees and the ta
