Student Entrepreneur to High-Tech Business Owner

While studying computer science, a college entrepreneur began helping realtors re-wire older homes for internet, television and other cabling. The demand quickly grew along with his reputation, and he started his new business, WildWires, with one partner. He attended NxLevel training at the local SBDC and he received one-on-one assistance with tax and accounting requirements and training in QuickBooks. Counseling covered areas of income and expense accounts, the use of inventory and non-inventory items, and questions regarding the bonding process needed for contracting work with the federal government.

As the business grew, the SBDC continued to be a resource the owner, offering information on drug testing, employee issues and planning for a line of credit to support the company’s growth. The business moved from a home operation to a technology incubator and then to new, expanded office space. In 2003, the entrepreneur started another technology business, to provide high speed internet, website hosting, and wireless services to the local area. The operation continues to grow and prosper, with 10 employees and a major expansion into commercial wiring and installation and the owner participates on the SBDC advisory board and is a vocal supporter of the SBDC program.
