Spanish Academy & Cultural Institute

Founded in 1987 the Spanish Academy & Cultural Institute provides a vital educational link for the non-Hispanic community wishing to increase their knowledge of the Spanish language and Hispanic culture. Utilizing innovative course work, practical language application, and proven teaching methods, the Institute offers a unique and enjoyable learning environment for any Spanish speaking need. In 2000, the Spanish Academy & Cultural Institute began offering industry specific (Banking, Architectural and Construction) Spanish courses.

Director Lisa Zajur contacted the Greater Richmond SBDC in 2002 to develop a business plan for the expansion of her business into mass marketing, CDs, and videos. Financial issues (with an angel investor adding $250,000) in the business were a primary consideration. Lisa took advantage of several professional and marketing opportunities, including the NxLevel for CEO’s class offered by the SBDC.

The Institute’s key to success has been customer service. They can custom design a course and put everything on audio program for their clients. Instructors are trained in Voice Tonality Technology and other teaching methods that engage participants in the learning process. The Institute has demonstrated great success with this innovative approach to learning and has grown from three employees to ten within the past two years while income revenues have tripled. The Institute will launch its audio programs nationally in 2004. The Chairman and President of the National Hispanic Chamber of Commerce is a supporter of and will help with the national launch.
